Go Underground in the Río Camuy Caverns

activities puerto rico logo

The Río Camuy Caverns in Puerto Rico’s northwest reveal one of the world’s largest cave systems. Carved by the third-largest underground river on earth, the Rio Camuy, the cave network remained largely unknown until 1958. Today visitors can explore the main cavern, Cueva Clara, by boarding a shuttle into a forested valley and following a guide through massive chambers. Roughly 10 miles of passages, 220 caves and 17 entrances have been mapped, with estimates that there may be hundreds more. Stalactites hang from cathedral-like ceilings, sinkholes let shafts of light in, and the sound of the underground river echoes through the darkness. The park is about a two-hour drive from San Juan and provides a unique glimpse into Puerto Rico’s geological wonders.
