Relax on World‑Famous Flamenco Beach

activities puerto rico logo

Located on the island of Culebra roughly 20 miles off Puerto Rico’s east coast, Flamenco Beach is consistently ranked among the world’s best beaches. It’s famed for its white sand, bright blue water and gentle waves protected by a horseshoe‑shaped cove. Snorkellers love the clear, shallow lagoon where sea turtles and tropical fish glide over coral heads, and sunbathers can relax on powdery sand that truly looks “diamond‑dusted”.

Facilities make Flamenco ideal for day trips. The beach has lifeguards, showers, restrooms and food trucks that sell fresh seafood and cold drinks. To get there, drive from San Juan to the Ceiba ferry terminal (about 1½ hours) and then take a 45‑minute ferry to Culebra; ferries fill quickly, so book tickets in advance and arrive early. Alternatively, small flights operate from San Juan’s Isla Grande Airport. Once on Culebra, taxis or public vans shuttle visitors to the beach entrance.

Flamenco Beach is more than pretty sand. The U.S. military once used part of the shoreline for weapons practice; rusted tanks remain at the far end, now covered in graffiti and serving as photo props. Offshore, reef formations shelter fish, rays and occasional nurse sharks. Seasonally, flamingos feed in nearby lagoons. Because Flamenco holds Blue Flag status and multiple accolades as one of the world’s top beaches, visitors are encouraged to practise Leave No Trace: pack out trash, avoid stepping on coral and use reef‑safe sunscreen.

After a swim, stroll to the food kiosks behind the beach for fried fish, empanadillas and fresh coconut water. For longer stays, consider camping at the adjacent campground (permits required) or staying at a guesthouse in Dewey town. With its postcard‑perfect scenery and laid‑back vibe, Flamenco Beach exemplifies Caribbean paradise.
