Visit Casa Bacardí: Puerto Rico’s Rum Distillery Experience

activities puerto rico logo

Perched on the shores of Catano across from Old San Juan, the Casa Bacardí Visitor Center invites rum aficionados to trace the origins of one of the world’s most famous spirits. The Bacardí family first distilled rum in Cuba in 1862, and after relocating, they established a distillery in Old San Juan in 1936. Today Bacardí is the best‑selling rum brand in the United States, and its bat logo – inspired by fruit bats that lived in the original distillery – is recognised worldwide.

Inside the visitor center, a museum explores the company’s history and the cultural significance of rum in Puerto Rico. The basic Visitor Center tour includes a commemorative cup and welcome cocktail, then guides lead you through exhibits showcasing vintage advertisements and documents. You’ll learn how Don Facundo revolutionised rum‑making by charcoal‑filtering and aging his spirits, transforming a rough liquor into a smooth sipper. Stories explain how the Bacardí bat symbolises luck and health and how the brand survived prohibition, war and exile.

For a deeper experience, upgrade to the Rum Tasting tour or Mixology class. In the Cathedral of Rum’s sleek tasting room, experts pour several expressions of Bacardí—from crisp light rum to aged reserves—and explain each one’s character. The Mixology seminar adds hands‑on instruction: you’ll shake and muddle your own Cuba Libre, Mojito and Daiquiri under the guidance of a professional bartender. Both premium tours include everything in the basic package, and while minors may attend, only adults can taste.

Casa Bacardí sits across the bay from Old San Juan. Visitors can drive or take an inexpensive ferry from the Catano terminal, which offers panoramic views of El Morro and the city skyline. Tours operate daily but often sell out, so book ahead—especially for mixology classes. Plan to spend a couple of hours exploring the exhibits, tasting rums and browsing the gift shop. A spacious outdoor bar serves cocktails and snacks, making it easy to toast Puerto Rico’s rum heritage. If you sample liberally, arrange a designated driver or use a rideshare to travel safely.
