Hike and Cool Off in Toro Negro State Forest

activities puerto rico logo

Toro Negro State Forest is Puerto Rico’s second-largest state forest, spanning nearly 7,996 acres across the central mountains in Orocovis, Jayuya, Ciales, Juana Díaz and Ponce. While El Yunque receives more press, Toro Negro offers a quieter escape. Here you can hike up to the island’s highest summit, Cerro Punta (4,389 feet), and wander among nine rivers that nourish lush vegetation and cascading waterfalls.

The forest protects a mosaic of ecosystems from wet subtropical forest to dwarf cloud forest. About seven miles of trails crisscross the reserve, ranging from old service roads to steep ridges that end at sweeping overlooks. Along the way you may encounter ferns and orchids, hear the calls of six endemic bird species and spot lizards skittering across the path. Over 160 tree species, 30 bird species and 20 reptile species thrive here, and an observation tower known as La Torre grants panoramic views of the green peaks.

Toro Negro is also famed for its swimming holes. Charcos such as Charco de los Suspiros and Charco La Confesora shimmer along the trails, inviting hikers to cool off in the clear, chilly water. Wear sturdy shoes because paths can be muddy and slippery, and avoid visiting during heavy rain when flash floods may occur. You can camp at the Doña Juana Recreation Area near the park’s main entrance, and the drive along Highway 149 offers spectacular mountain vistas but includes narrow, twisting curves.

Plan ahead to make the most of your excursion. Pack plenty of water, snacks and a map since cell service is limited. The forest is open daily, but mornings offer the best chance of clear skies before afternoon showers roll in. Families with young children should stick to the shorter, well-marked trails and always supervise near rivers. For a deeper connection with nature, spend the night under the stars and wake to the sound of coqui frogs and rustling leaves. With soaring peaks, endemic wildlife and hidden charcos, Toro Negro promises one of Puerto Rico’s most rewarding off-the-beaten-path adventures.
